... It was a great pleasure to work with the Co-Founder and Strategy and Development Consultant at Catalystas Consulting, Aviva Stein, who guided Atlas Relief and Development International (ARDI) through a comprehensive #strategicplanning process that involved all members of our team. The ARDI team benefited from the experience to collaboratively brainstorm and better understand our current and evolving structure, decision-making processes, and ultimate goals. Catalystas guided the ARDI team by providing support in making sure all staff members felt comfortable sharing their thoughts and giving constructive feedback. Catalystas also supported ARDI in revisiting our history and motivations, conducting an industry #analysis to better understand #strengths, #weaknesses, #challenges, and #opportunities as well as potential partners and competition, and short, medium, and long-term goals for the organization’s internal growth. Through their support, we have developed an updated strategic plan and have a stronger #collective understanding of our path forward as a multi-regional team.We are very grateful and look forward to collaborating again in the near future!Learn more: bit.ly/3uatZro ... #HateIsAVirusThe #COVID19 pandemic has revealed and reinforced social and ethnic-racial inequalities rooted in the time leading to many discriminatory acts across the world again. Racial discrimination against #Chinese and other #Asian communities has risen rapidly since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic especially, in the United States but also in many countries around the world. Increased discrimination has endangered the lives of many Asian Americans and has long-term negative impacts on the economic, social, physical, and psychological well-being of Asian communities of all backgrounds. Since COVID-19 was first reported in #China, it has led to an increase in acts of #sinophobia as well as #prejudices, #xenophobia, #violence, and #racism against people of East, North, and South Asians. Some media sources began using the term ‘Chinese virus’ to describe COVID-19, which was normalized and even encouraged by high-level politicians and media sources. People perceived to be ‘Chinese’ or ‘Asians’ are somehow directly associated with the #Coronavirus, which has caused them to suffer from discrimination, unfair treatment, racism, and even physical attacks. The terms ‘Asian’ and ‘Chinese’ tend to be interchangeable in both racist discourses and everyday language. This generalization and homogenization of all Asians further encourage and contributes to discriminatory practices.Asians in the United States and around the world - including in countries where ARDI operates in Germany and Turkey - are reporting a significant increase in hate crimes, harassment, and discrimination tied to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. More than a year after these attacks began increasing, this rise in discrimination tied to the ongoing pandemic has galvanized people, many of whom have long felt invisible, to speak out about the hatred and racism being directed their way. Since the pandemic is not going away in the near future, and the negative impacts of the pandemic will be long-lasting, discrimination against people of Chinese ethnicity and other communities of Asian descent will very likely continue if increased efforts to call out and criminalize discrimination and violence - both in policy and in practice.#ARDI invites people of all backgrounds and locations to speak up against anti-Asian discrimination associated to COVID-19 - and also hate speech and violence in general. Together we must work side by side to stand up to racial discrimination and protect/support the communities being targeted. 📣“Life From My Lens - Syrian Refugee Women’s Perspectives in Istanbul”📣What does it mean to be a Syrian refugee in Istanbul? What does integration into the Turkish host community feel like to Syrian refugees? These are two of the question prompts that 15 unique women from the HAYAT Syrian Refugee Women’s Collective answered during a recent multi-media communications training and photography contest supported by Atlas Relief and Development International (ARDI) in Istanbul, Turkey. This activity is a part of a larger project focused on capacitating the HAYAT Collective with skills and support to lead community-based programming in Istanbul that addresses root-causes of insecurity within the Syrian refugee community.ARDI initiated the activity with a training session focused on the importance of amplifying the unique perspectives of Syrian refugee women and empowering them to take charge of the multi-media narrative being shown about Syrian refugees online - often from the perspectives of non-Syrian refugees. ARDI and the members of the HAYAT Collective discussed the importance of honest online representations of the Syrian refugee experience in Istanbul - both the positive achievements and the difficult challenges - in order for refugee’s personal experiences to help counteract the harmful disinformation used against refugees in media. In addition, the session focused on simple photography skills, such as taking quality pictures using a cell phone camera, identifying the best forms of picture lighting, and photograph composition techniques. Following the training session, ARDI initiated a photography contest centered around visual storytelling in line with four main prompts. The 15 members of the HAYAT Syrian Refugee Women’s Collective were asked to personally take one picture that represented (from their personal perspective) each of the four photo prompts:Prompt 1: “What does it mean to be a refugee in Istanbul?”Prompt 2: “What does violence or security mean in refugee communities?”Prompt 3: “What does integration feel like for Syrians in Istanbul?”Prompt 4: “What can a photo portray about the unique experiences of Syrian refugees that words cannot?”Once all of the women had taken pictures in line with each prompt, ARDI added all pictures to a survey voting template that enabled the HAYAT Collective women to choose their ‘top 3’ pictures from each of the prompt categories. Based on all the votes from the HAYAT Collective women, the top pictures from each category were selected and are now being showcased on ARDI’s “Digital Gallary” page. The HAYAT Collective has also shared the “Digital Gallary” with their own local networks with the aim of engaging media platforms in Istanbul to also help amplify the “Life From My Lens - Syrian Refugee Women’s Perspectives in Istanbul” project.
